Operational Overview

Surfer's AI Tracker utilizes advanced technology to scrape real-world data from major AI models, providing unfiltered insights into how brands are mentioned across various platforms. This allows users to see their Visibility Score, mention gaps, and competitor performance in real-time.

The workflow is designed for efficiency, enabling users to track specific prompts, evaluate performance, and bridge gaps in AI mentions. With daily reports and actionable insights, brands can adapt their strategies to enhance their visibility and control their narrative in the AI landscape.

However, brands must be aware of the risks associated with AI visibility tracking, including potential misrepresentation in AI responses and the need for continuous content optimization to maintain relevance and authority in search results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI Search Analytics be used without a full Surfer subscription?

Yes. Surfer documents AI Search Analytics as a standalone subscription that includes AI Tracker without the rest of the Surfer content toolkit. No separate Surfer content plan is required to run the tracker.

Which AI platforms does AI Search Analytics track, and does it include Claude?

AI Search Analytics tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. Surfer does not list Claude as a tracked engine in AI Tracker. Claude is documented as a compatible MCP client, which is different from being one of the monitored answer engines.

How often does AI Search Analytics refresh prompts, and what prompt limits are available?

AI Search Analytics refreshes tracked prompts daily. Surfer offers tiers for 50, 100, 200, or unlimited concurrently tracked prompts. The prompt allowance can be changed through the subscription settings, while the unlimited tier uses custom pricing.

Can AI Search Analytics show which sources and URLs AI models cite?

Yes. The Sources dashboard shows cited domains, individual URLs, reference counts, and how often a URL appears in tracked AI responses. It also shows which of your own URLs appear and supports source-level comparison with competitors.

Can AI Search Analytics compare competitors and show share of voice or position?

Yes for competitor comparison, Share of Voice, Visibility Score, mention rate, and average position. Surfer's AI Search Analytics product page also lists Mention Gap as core analytics, but its Sources Dashboard says Mention Gap is available only on Pro, Peace of Mind, and Enterprise. That makes the standalone AI Search Analytics entitlement for Mention Gap unclear from the current public documentation.

Can AI Search Analytics export or share reports with clients who do not have Surfer accounts?

Yes. Surfer lets you export AI Tracker analysis to CSV and create a public view-only project link. The shared link can be opened without a Surfer login, and the owner can reset the link later to revoke the old access URL.

Does AI Search Analytics support MCP or API access?

Surfer's AI Search Analytics page and the Requirements section of its MCP documentation say AI Search Analytics can use Surfer MCP. The FAQ on that same MCP page lists only Pro, Peace of Mind, and Enterprise, so the current public MCP entitlement is internally inconsistent. Surfer separately documents API access for Peace of Mind and Enterprise, and its API documentation says AI Tracker is not currently exposed through the API.

Does AI Search Analytics suggest prompts automatically, or do users have to create them?

During AI Tracker project setup, Surfer can analyze the brand and suggest topics and prompts to track, and users can also enter their own prompts. After the project is live, Surfer says new prompts must be added manually, although prompts can still be organized, moved, or removed.

What happens when an AI Search Analytics subscription is canceled?

Surfer says canceling turns off renewal and keeps the subscription active until the end of the current paid period. Its general cancellation documentation says stored projects and other work are erased after the subscription expires. Buyers who need to retain tracker results should export the data they need before expiration.

How is AI Search Analytics different from using AI Tracker inside Surfer Pro or Peace of Mind?

AI Search Analytics is the tracker by itself, with daily refresh and prompt tiers from 50 to unlimited. Surfer Pro bundles 50 daily prompts with the broader content toolkit, while Peace of Mind bundles 100 daily prompts with higher content limits, API access, and additional support. AI Search Analytics is the cleaner fit when the buyer wants AI visibility measurement without Surfer's full content-production workflow.
